Jira and monday.com are project management and time-tracking tools. Because they were developed with different user bases in mind, they have significant differences in functionality. The two solutions can be made even more effective when they are integrated.
What is Jira?
Developed by Atlassian, Jira is a project management software suite optimized for Agile methodologies. It is designed to facilitate project management, issue tracking, and workflow automation. It is less feature-rich than Monday.com but has several advantages. Jira is simple to use and is ideal for small teams. As a project management tool focused on Agile, Jira is especially well-suited to software development. It also has a lower price point than Monday.com and the free Jira plan includes most features including Jira cloud support.
What is Monday.com?
Monday.com is a general-purpose project and work management tool. It’s hugely popular, attracting countless positive user reviews. It has significantly more features than Jira but doesn’t offer Jira software’s native Agile support. The Monday work management platform is suitable for a range of contexts besides software development. The premium options for Monday.com are more expensive than Jira, but the standard plan is similarly priced and gives access to features like charts, Monday time management tracking, etc.
There is also a free trial and a largely free plan. There is a range of Monday.com integrations available. Monday.com can be used with various other tools such as PPM Express and other project management tools like Zoho Projects, or a tray platform like Tray.
Why integrate Jira and Monday.com?
By combining the Jira work management platform with Monday.com, you can enjoy the benefits of both solutions. For example, instead of requiring add-ons and third-party options to use Gannt charts in Jira, you can use the Gannt feature in Monday.com to view information from Jira. Another example is scrum boards: Monday.com doesn’t offer scrum support.
Integrating Jira with Monday.com will give you access to scrum boards. Integrating the two solutions allows you to shuttle tasks between both boards more easily, saving time and facilitating automation. Once the two are properly connected and set up, changes made on Monday.com will show up in Jira and vice versa.
How integrating Jira and Monday.com works
Integration needs to be initiated from your Monday.com account — you will be using Jira’s features on Monday.com. You will not be able to view your Monday.com boards in Jira.
The first step is to obtain an API token from Jira. You will need to sign into Jira and navigate to your profile. From the “manage your account” screen, go to “security” and use the “create and manage API tokens” option to create and copy the token. This token will allow Monday.com and the Jira software servers to recognize each other.
Once you have the API token, you will need to sign in to Monday.com. Please proceed to the specific board that you will be linking to Jira. Click the “integrate” button. Select Jira from the menu. You will be presented with different integration options, called “recipes”.
Once you have selected your recipe, you will need to fill out your information. Enter the email that you use with your Jira account into the email field, then paste the API token into the token field. In the final field, enter the URL for the Jira board you are integrating. You will then be able to set up your recipe from the options available. Once this is completed, click “done” to finalize your integration and exit the menu.
You will be taken back to the Monday.com board. There will now be an additional column on the right of your screen, which will show information from Jira.
The Monday.com and Jira integration process is simple and straightforward. While there’s helpful customer support if you need it, the process is intuitive and most Monday integrations can be completed in minutes. You may need to adjust the setup and experiment to ensure that everything is operating as required. If necessary, your chosen recipe can be adapted with custom fields.
